According to Vanguard, The Lagos State government has disclosed that its N113.3bn education budget (representing 27.11% of the state’s budget) is about one-third of the N369bn budgeted by the Federal Government for the entire country; just as it assured of its commitment to the implementation of the one meal a day programme.
This wàs revealed by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the grand finale of activities to mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration and to commemorate his one year in office, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Speaking on the theme “Stop Violence Against Children”, Ambode,who spoke through his deputy, Dr. Idiat Adebule, promised that anyone who perpetrate violence against children in any form be it physical, sexual, psychological, deliberate neglect, kidnap and child trafficking would be dealt with according to the according to the dictates of the law.
Governor Ambode commended the improvement in the education sector as exemplified by the results of the various co-curricular activities locally and internationally, noting that it has been a source of joy to the State Government. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi, reminded students that education remains the veritable means of attaining greatness as education helps to prepare individuals for life challenges, therefore there was the need for them to strife hard to make parents and entire community happy through their performances.
Speaking on the meal a day program, Adebule said efforts are on-going to perfect the program aimed at increasing the nutrition content of school children meals to keep them healthy and encourage more pupils and students to stay in school. According to her, “the State Government has made provision for it in the budget to show her commitment, but is awaiting the intervention of the Federal Government since it was designed to be funded by the Federal and State Government on 60:40 ratio counterpart funding.
She added that, in fulfilling her promise to lessen the burden of parents in the academic pursuit of their children and wards, the government has paid N561,346,100 to WAEC for examination and administrative fees of 44,005 SS 2 students who sat for the last Mar/May 2016 WASSCE in the state.
