ASUU threatens to embark on strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike to press home its demands for the implementation of its 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.
The ASUU Lagos Zone Coordinator, Prof. Olusoji Sowande, said this at a news conference on Tuesday in Lagos.
Sowande said that the union was planning to toe this part after several efforts to ensure that the government address the pending demands, proved abortive.
He said that the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on funding of state universities, breaches of the conditions of service and re-negotiation of the agreement, were still pending.
The coordinator also mentioned other demands like the exclusion of Nigerian universities from Pension Management Company and non-release of NEEDS Assessment Intervention Fund.
He said that funding of state universities, earned academic allowance and renegotiation of the agreement were parts of the outstanding issues.
Sowande recalled that the union had embarked on strike in 2012 and 2013 as part of the efforts to make the government implement the agreement, adding that the issues remained unresolved.
He said that the 2009 agreement provided for a periodic review after every three years which had not been done.
“The review of the agreement should have been undertaken in 2012 and 2015 but that did not happen.‎
“The implication is that our union has shown enough patriotism and understanding on these matters in the last four years.
“We are perplexed and disappointed that both the Federal and State Governments are not responding to our consistent appeals to bring about genuine transformation in the education sector, ‘’ he said.
According to him, embarking on strike has never been a favourable choice as the Students and ASUU members have always suffered the pains more.
“It is unfortunate that the only language government appears to respect and listens to is that of industrial action like strike,”he said.
The don said that the National officers of the union had met with the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu on May 10 and tabled ten-point demand.
He said that the minister had promised that the issues would be resolved within two weeks but nothing had been done till now.
Sowande said that based on MOU signed in November 2013, “Nigerian universities requires N1.3 trillion to revitalise the system’’, adding that the government was already in arrears of N605 billion as at the third quarter of 2016.
He said that the government had refused to release N128 billion and N250 billion respectively for the earned academic allowance of three years after the MoU was signed.‎
“In order to forestall this avoidable crisis, we appeal to all genuinely progressive individuals and groups to prevail on both the Federal and State Governments to commence release of funds for the listed purposes.
“This is to arrest the brewing and potentially combustible situation in the Nigerian university system before it degenerated into a serious conflagration,” he said.

UNICAL Bursar Suspended Over Alleged Fraud, Forgery And Threat To Life

According to a post on Naijaloaded, The University of Calabar authority on Monday suspended the bursar, Mr. Peter Agi, over allegations of fraud, forgery and threat to life.
It would be recalled that academic and administrative activities in the university were interrupted for a few hours last week, following a protest by different groups comprising students and workers in support of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Zana Akpagu, on the one hand and the bursar, on the other.
Following the development, an inquiry was immediately set up by the management of the institution to look into issues that led to the protest.
In a letter of suspension signed by the Registrar, Mr. Moses Abang, the management of the institution alleged that the bursar had been found guilty of impersonating the vice-chancellor on the e-payment platform of the Central Bank of Nigeria, among others.
But, in a swift reaction, Agi said he was not aware of his suspension, adding that he was currently on sick leave with the knowledge of the management of the institution.
However, the letter of suspension read in part, “In an emergency meeting held today, August 22, 2016, the management considered recent developments on campus, especially your arrest by the Nigeria Police vide letter no. AB:3621/CRS/DFA/VOL.T/123 of August 17, 2016, on allegations of fraud, forgery and threat to life. It has become imperative that you step aside as Bursar and clear yourself of these allegations.
“Furthermore, management observed that you have been impersonating the vice-chancellor on the CBN e-payment platform by making final approvals and payments, a duty that is the responsibility of the vice-chancellor, who is the Chief Accounting Officer of the university.
“Again, you absented yourself from office without requesting any of your deputies to act for you, thus creating a vacuum in the administration of the Bursary.
“You deliberately refused to purchase an official car for the deputy vice-chancellor (administration) eight months after he was appointed into office. You have ignored several council and management directives on this.
“You bluntly refused to pay TETFUND contractors who have successfully executed jobs and rendered services to the university, even when such contractors have been cleared for payments. The consequence of this is that while other universities are already making progress and accessing the 2015 allocation, the University of Calabar cannot exhaust the 2013 allocation to qualify for the next tranche.”
The letter noted that the actions of the suspended bursar clearly manifested an orchestrated and a deliberate design to bring the institution to ridicule.
The letter therefore directed Agi to hand over immediately to Mrs. Atim Mensah, who is the most senior deputy bursar, while Mr. Joseph Odum should take over the previous duties covered by Mensah.
But Agi said, “I am not aware of any suspension. I have not been queried. I am aware of the guideline and rules on procedures in the appointment, suspension or otherwise of any principal officer of the university. I am currently on sick break and I wrote a letter to that effect copying all principal officers. So, for anybody to announce my suspension without the set rules amounts to nothing. I am still the bursar.”

Attention!!! Nigerian Music Industry Set To Mark “No Music Day” On Sept 1

Plans are presently in top gear to mark the annual ‘No Music Day’ across Nigeria on September 1. “No Music Day” is a day the music industry has dedicated to bringing the attention of the Nigerian nation to the widespread infringement of the rights of song writers, composers, performers, music publishers, record labels and other stakeholders in the music industry.
The theme of this year’s event is “The Monetization of Musical Content in the Digital Space”. At this period of dwindling national income, No Music Day 2016 is intended to focus on revealing the significant financial benefits that can accrue to the nation’s traumatized economy if the huge potentials in the music industry in the digital environment are properly harnessed.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s event, renowned Intellectual Property activist and Chairman of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), Chief Tony Okoroji said “Every year, in marking ‘No Music Day’, our objective has been to engage the Nigerian people and the various governments on the potential contributions of Nigerian music to the socio-economic development of the Nigerian nation and the necessity to fully deploy the substantial comparative advantage which our nation possesses in this area so as to provide hundreds of thousands of well-paying jobs to the teeming masses of Nigerian youth who parade the streets of our country with little hope. I have no doubt that if the right environment is created in Nigeria, the enormous creative energy exhibited by our young people will be released to the amazement of the world”
Speaking also on the No Music Day event, songwriter and CEO of NowMuzik, Mr Efe Omorogbe said, “This coming September 1 will mark the eighth consecutive edition of No Music Day. We hope that everyone remembers that historic week in 2009 when for several days, a group of Nigerian artistes held huge rallies at the National Theatre in Lagos and went on a week-long hunger strike to protest the cruel abuse of the rights of artistes in Nigeria. For the first time in the history of mankind, the music industry in a country called for the halt of the broadcast of music all over the country for a whole day, September 1, 2009. That action captured the imagination of the world and ‘No Music Day’ was born”.
In the words of Songstress and Queen of Love, Azeezat Allen, “We are planning seriously to make No Music Day 2016 a memorable event. I hope that COSON and the Nigerian Music Industry Coalition will receive the support of everyone across Nigeria. Let us unleash the creative ingenuity of our people and create a better tomorrow for Nigeria’s children”
In commemoration of No Music Day as has become the practice, broadcast stations across Nigeria have been requested not to broadcast music between the hours of 8am and 10am on Thursday, September 1, 2016 as a mark of solidarity with the nation’s creative industry which has suffered immensely from the debilitating infringement of copyright. Rather than broadcast music, the stations have been asked to dedicate the 8 am to 10 am time belt to the broadcast of interviews, documentaries, debates and discussions that focus on the rights of creative people and the potential contributions of creative activities to the national economy.
Newspapers and magazines across the country are also requested to publish special features on these issues in the coming days.
The Nigerian public is requested to tune in to different domestic radio and television stations on September 1 to engage members and affiliates of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) and other music industry experts who will spread out to diverse broadcast stations to discuss “The Monetization of Musical Content in the Digital Space” as the Nigerian nation seeks alternative resources to replace the dwindling oil revenue.

Make More Money back School!! to Sterling Bank woos schools, parents with juicy offers

Sterling Bank’s Back-To-School Campaign may provide succor for many parents, guardian, teachers and proprietors of schools in Nigeria as they prepare for the new school year in September.
The primary target for the campaign are the primary and secondary schools (administrators, owners and teachers) while the secondary audience are all primary and secondary school-students and their parents.
Areas covered under the campaign include school financing, asset finance, textbook and educational materials finance for schools; school fees finance for parents; coding and robotics Summer Boot Camp for children, and household equipment finance and training for teachers, among others.
The Bank’s Group Head, Strategy & Finance, Mr. Shina Atilola in a statement, explained that the school fees financing solution was introduced to provide parents with instant financing for school fees and allow them put their kids in school while awaiting salaries and other receivables.
He explained that under the Bank’s Asset finance scheme, existing and new account holders will qualify for short-term financing against receivables while “Sterling Bank can finance acquisition of Buses, ICT Infrastructure, Interactive Boards and other items the school may wish to purchase in the Back-to-School season under the asset finance scheme”.
The chief strategist added that schools patronizing the bank can access finance for a 90-day tenor at good rates.
“This would be an incentive to school owners as surveys have shown that a large number of schools have challenges with payment of salaries and for renovation projects when school fees are not fully received.  Existing and prospective schools can also enjoy free deployment of our Eduportal and Payment Gateway at no cost to the school. The solution, he noted, provides a platform to integrate the payment of school fees, levies and any other school-related payments. The platform also  aids record-keeping, and make for seamless day-to-day management of operations in schools.
While the Bank offers schools a quick financing solution to purchase textbooks and learning materials from major publishers and bookshops like Learn Africa Plc, Doroena Books and other designated outlets for the school year, Atilola explained that schools that open salary accounts for their teachers this season will have their teachers qualify automatically for the bank’s Personal Financial Management and other training programmes (for both local and foreign courses).
Under the Household Equipment Finance, he explained that teachers with salary accounts would qualify for discounted acquisition of household items with flexible payment plans.

OOSE!!! UI to admit 3,000 out of over 29,000 candidates

The Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan (UI), Prof Idowu Olayinka has said that only 3,000 candidates out of the over 29,000 who scored 200 and above in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and chose the premier university would be offered admission.
The Vice Chancellor lamented that poor funding, infrastructure deficit, student-lecturer ratio and limitation of Hostel accommodation would not allow the University go beyond its present carrying capacity.
Candidates who chose the university have been anxious to hear the admission guideline from the premier university since the ban on post-UTME examination which the Vice Chancellor attested had improved the quality of graduates and reduced those asked to withdraw from the University.
While speaking on the topic “Challenges of Building a World Class University” at the 68th Interdisciplinary Research Discourse of the Postgraduate school under the Deanship of Professor Adeyinka Aderinto, Professor Olayinka noted that Nigerian government must decide if it wants her universities to be globally competitive or not by adequately funding research and fixing infrastructural deficits bedeviling them.
While noting that without research a university is a glorified secondary school, the Vice Chancellor noted that Nigerian government should go beyond expressing ‘suspect’ regret at the ranking of her universities at public functions, rather, it should allocate more funds to revatilise teaching and research.
The professor of Geology listed inadequate teaching and research facilities, problem of attracting and retaining top-class faculty, poor funding, overstretched infrastructure, inconsistent policy of education, inadequate suitable staff, and government attitude to education as factors affecting the global competitiveness of the university.
“Funding is needed to make UI a world class university. A globally competitive university is that which can boast of top-class scholars with sound funding of research because without research, a university is a glorified secondary school. While our goal is to train new generation of leaders we have challenges towards achieving this. The mark of a truly world class institution is measured by what her graduates do after leaving the institution.
“Oxford will boast that they have produced more Prime Ministers so is Harvard on world leaders. Of course UI graduates are doing well all over Nigeria but we must do more so that our graduates can be blessing to Nigeria and the global community. Nigerian leaders should go beyond feeling bad at the ranking of our universities. If UI is presently ranked 19 in Africa and the top 4 varsities are in South Africa, then Nigeria government should understudy what they do in south Africa for their universities including research grants and learning environment and infrastructure. We cannot be globally competitive without electricity. We will be more productive if power is available. We should be playing leading role in research and innovation, contribute to local and regional economies and this will drive our global competitiveness.”
In his speech, Chairman of the occasion and former Vice Chancellor, Prof Bankole Oyediran noted that universities are the power house of knowledge designed to contribute to the development and planning through the production of innovative works, ground breaking research and high quality personnel.
However, he noted that while it is obvious that universities and academics can play vital role in development most African countries including Nigeria declared recognition of the role of universities in national development remains mere politically correct rhetoric.
The former VC then noted that a world class university, which by implication is research active can play vital role in regional economy and development.

#celebrateChierikaUkogu# My view about Chierika Ukogu and Nigeria Government

This lady of honor today did stand as a hero before all Nigerians today. When others were shouting and threatening not to participate in their choice of sport as a representative of Nigeria in Rio 2016 because Nigeria government refuses to pay them their allowance.

Chierika Ukogu a 23 year old Nigerian – American Rower refused to limit herself to the poor and selfish leaders we have in Nigerian, set of leaders that keep enjoying seeing  the citizens cry in pain for lack of social infrastructure .They keep buying houses, cars, investments and taking the right to run businesses that would have been under the care of the federal government so as to ease the pain of the citizenry but since they have the wherewithal they ensure crying citizens live in pain due to escalating prices.

Dear Nigerian youths, courageous Chierika Ukogu was not looking at the present situation of her father land but she was looking at her glory to come which prompted her to stop schooling to raise some money so she could sponsor herself to Rio 2016. Today, I will say Chierika Ukogu is my Olympic Hero claiming silver medal in the female rowing adorning the colors of a country that did not remember her when she started a gofundme campaign in 2015 and successfully raised over $14,000 a bit short of her expected $15,000 to get herself equipped and prepared for  Rio 2016,in Brazil.

This is my view; all Nigerian youth should be happy and proud of being a Nigerian because we have all it takes to be the echelon of excellence in any field of endeavor. Let us leave the cycle of people that complain and encourage and join hands with the level of people that compete for Gold on the world stage.
These shameful leaders keep deceiving many of us to the extent that t they deploy the youth of this generation to render the posterity bleak and distraught.

They keep telling you that you are the leaders of tomorrow putting you to the downstream, giving you a false hope and degrading you to a level of servitude why their children are leading big companies, flexing in politics, controlling states in the country. “Open your eyes Nigerian youths you are the leaders of now and builders of tomorrow”.  Your strength, talent, education, unity and corporation are all your weapons to fulfill your destiny as the future builders.
In unity we stand as Nigerian youths the faster we move in building a better future. Join Adefowoju Ayodele a motivational speaker, Educational consultant, writer and CEO Araa Group by making your likes count.

“The graduation today is a great one.  The girls have been empowered and are ready for employment. The school pupils here today can also do some things.  We have a long waiting list of people wanting to enroll for our programme.  We need to encourage other women; we need to reduce poverty.
“Training of Lady Mechanics is free; we pay these girls to learn.  If you want your daughter to be involved, bring her to us and in two years, she will be a star,” she said.
In her speech, the Deputy Governor, Mrs Idiat Adebule, who was represented by Mr Olawumi Gasper, Executive Secretary, Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), thanked Mrs Aguebor for investing in the girls.  She counseled the beneficiaries to put their training to good use as a way of giving back.

“I heard about this training from a friend that graduated in 2013.  She works with Choscharis.  We played football together.  I thought that since I could play football, which is hard, I can do it.  They paid me N10,000 per month in the first year.  We had both theory and practical training.
“I intend to work in a company because the roadside is not befitting us ladies,” she said.
The programme was graced by representatives of various ministries including the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Women Affairs, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB).
