Federal Govt plans 16 tech Colleges and Vocational centers

The Minister of State for Education, Prof Anthony Anwukah, has announced plans by the Federal Government to establish about 16 more technical colleges and vocational centres across the nation to foster entrepreneurship among youths.
He made this known while speaking at the ninth annual speech day and prize giving/valedictory ceremony of the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Ijebu-Imusin, Ogun State.
Anwukah, who is currently on tour of all 21 technical colleges run by the Federal Government, said the aim of establishing more is to position the country to produce more skilled craftsmen and technicians who will be job creators.
He said: “I want to assure all here present at this occasion that Technical/Vocational Education is pivotal in our education policy. This is the reason why we are enforcing the 60 per cent/40 per cent ratio in our admission policy for Technical/Science in our FSTCs.  Effort is being made by the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure that Federal Science and Technical Colleges are built in states that are yet to have one and vocational training centres in local government areas. We are determined to move away from the production of job-seeker to job creators.”
Inaugurating new projects in the institution, including a fully equipped e-learning centre funded by the Universal Basic Education Committee (UBEC) and a block of toilets, the Minister said new projects have been approved in the 2016 appropriation bill for the college.
They are completion of perimeter fencing, renovation of the plumbing workshop, renovation of female hostel, and construction of ICT centre.
He charged the school to make the most of the new facilities and ensure their safety and maintenance, while advising the graduands to pursue success with determination to avoid being left behind by their peers.
Principal of the College, Mrs Anastasia Opara expressed gratitude to the government for its prompt attendance to the school’s calls, while calling for improvement in areas of construction of road network and drainage system, clinic, staff quarters, students’ bus, hostel renovation, among others.
To the graduands, Mrs Opara said: “I enjoin you to always remember you are a creature of excellence. Do not forget your alma mater. You are going into the wide world; you have to open your eyes wide. Be the best you can be by being on top of your class. Go out and set new records, because I know you can do it.”
Management consultant, Mrs Fola Ogunsola was guest speaker, while School Based Management Committee (SBMC) Chairman, Hon Wale Oshun, was Father of the day at the event.

Register now or we shut you down Lagos State warns Private School

About 6,083 private schools have been captured in the ongoing Private School registration in Lagos State.
However, some well established schools are yet to be captured.
The state government had began a fresh registration exercise for private schools across the six education districts on July 28 to create a central database of Private schools’ operators.
Statistics from the exercise showed that of the schools captured in five of the six educational districts, a substantial number of the schools were still seeking government approval.
Addressing journalists shortly after touring schools in District 1, Agege, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi, lamented the low turnout of schools for the exercise before the deadline on Wednesday, saying “more school would have been captured if they had turned up earlier.”
“After inspection, I discovered that the response had been very low since the exercise started. But with one day left, I discovered was that the turnout has started to improving.”
Odeyemi disclosed that after the exercise about 11, 000 schools are expected to be capture in the exercise.
A breakdown of the schools captured so far in the exercise showed that 1,587 private schools were registered in District I; 1,089 in District II; 676 in III; 431 in IV; 1038 in V; and 623 in District VI.
Odeyemi however warned that, “At the end of this exercise, if any of the schools failed to register that implies the school owner deliberately wants to hide and does not want the government to monitor the activities in his school.  And the government will have no option than to shut the school because the registration is free.”
He reiterated that the registration was for planning purpose, saying, “We want to have every detail of our pupils in order to monitor them for development purpose. The future of the state lies in the hands of these students. And because of this, ensuring that they get the best education is the responsibility of the state government.
Earlier, the Director of Education Management Information System in Education District II, Mrs. Tayelolu Showemimo, had expressed concerns that that the “Big Schools” were not turning up to register.
She noted that the district targeted about 2,000 schools considering number of schools springing up daily but only got 676.

News: FG Scraps HND, Set to Merge Polytechnics with Universities

Federal Executive Council (FEC) - This move is part of the comprehensive reform of the tertiary education sector by the present administration.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has reportedly approved the scrapping of the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) by polytechnics in the country.

According to Financial Times, the FG has now restricted the award to only the students currently on admission in various polytechnics.

Minister of Education, Dr. Adamu Adamu disclosed that this move is part of the comprehensive reform of the tertiary education sector by the present administration.

This is following the FG's decision to scrap programmes currently being run by the polytechnics, which are not technology-based.

Adamu disclosed that polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities’ Councils.

The minister also added that this new arrangement will mean that polytechnics will only award the National Diploma (ND), while students interested in furthering their education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university.

He stated that the two top polytechnics, Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic will now be named City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna respectively.

The FEC, to confirm this decision, has approved the submission of the two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment into law.
