Secondary School students escape death from collapsed building

Four secondary school students as said to have escaped death from a collapsed two-storey building in Ilorin on Wednesday.

According to News Nigeria the students had been taken to the uncompleted building by one of their teacher to carry out a menial labour.

The teacher is said to have taken the students numerous times to the site as a form of punishment.

On Wednesday, while the boys were still busy on the site the two-storey building collapsed traping the students underneath.
The students were swiftly reduce and taken to the nearby building where they were cleaned up and return back to school.

Short history about May day popularly know as workers day

Now it’s a day to rest, a day to celebrate, a day to be with our families for 24 hours. Meanwhile this day was brought into existence by the second international, a pan-national organization of socialist and communist political parties to commemorate the Haymarket affair which occurred in Chicago on 4 may 1886

Haymarket affair

The Haymarket blast or Haymarket riot was the aftermath of a bombing that took place at a labor demonstration on Tuesday may 4 1886 at Haymarket square in Chicago. This protest was said to have started as a peaceful rally in support of workers striking for an eight-hour day and in reaction to the killing of several workers. During the peaceful protest an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb at police as they acted to disperse the public meeting.

The bomb blast that lead to gunfire from the police resulted in deaths and scores of people were wounded. After the riots, eight anarchists were later convicted for conspiracy through the internationally publicized legal proceedings. Seven were sentenced to death and one to a term of 15 years in prison.

The then governor of Illinois Richard J. Oglesby later changed the death sentence of two of the defendants to life in prison. One of the defendants committed suicide in jail rather than face the gallows while four were hanged on Nov 11, 1887.

In 1893, a new governor emerged and pardoned the remaining defendants and criticized the trial.

The Haymarket affair is generally considered significant as the origin of international workers day or May Day and the point of the incident still remains remarkable in Chicago till present.

Not minding the repression and several discouraging achiness that came up after the May 4 bombing, the Chicago wage earners only linked their forces and stiffened their resistance.

Popular pressure continued for the establishment of the 8-hour day, leading to a convention of the American federation of labor (AFL) in 1888, the union decided to campaign for the 8-hour day again, 1 may 1890 was agreed upon for workers to strike in pursue of eight-hour work day. In 1891, the second international recognized May Day as annual event. In 1904 social democratic party were called on to demonstrate actively on May first to establish eight hours work day and get workers rights. Unions of all countries were urged to go on strike on May 1, wherever it is possible without injury to the workers.

Better to comply than staying at home Unilag students re-think

The management of University of Lagos declaer their sincere Appreciations toward the action of the students to have comply with the condition for reabsorbtion of students back to school after few weeks of strike due to students protest last month.

This is contained in a statement by the Deputy Registrar, Information Unit of the institution, Mr Toyin Adebule and issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.According to the statement, a total of 19,373 students had downloaded the indemnity forms as at 12.30 p.m. on Friday, April 29.It said that contrary to the resistance put up by the proscribed students’ union leaders of the institution, the students had been besieging their faculties to sign the necessary forms ahead of resumption.

NAN reports that the senate of the University had, on April 25, announced that the institution would resume full academic activities on May 2.

Part of the conditions given to the students was that they should visit the school website and download the undertaking and indemnity form fill and submit to their various departments.

UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN SHUT DOWN INDEFINITELY

The management of the University of Ibadan yesterday announced the closure of the institution as a result of mass protest by students of the institution. 

Students were ordered to vacate the campus with immediate effect and all hostels to be closed latest by 4:00pm.

This development arose after the students of the institution put up a mass protest over the management’s action of rusticating Michael Tunji-Ekpeti, a 500 Level Petroleum Engineering student, who was said to have taken part in a recent protest by the students last semester over poor electricity and water supply in the school.

According  to a circular issued by the registrar of the institution, Dr O.I Olukoya, on Tuesday titled “Disturbance of peace and threat to lives and property on campus by some student of the University of Ibadan and other students” said that the management had decided to shut down the school indefinitely in order to safeguard lives and properties.

Therefore the students are advice to comply with directive till further notice.
