“Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise. JAMB regrets any inconvenience this decision would have caused the tertiary institutions

Court Grants Lagos Public Schools Students Right To Wear Hijab

There was wild jubilation at the premises of the Court of Appeal in Lagos on Thursday, July 21, as the court granted pupils in public and secondary schools in the state the right to wear Hijab (Islamic headscarf).
After the judgement, Muslim males and females were seen praising God and rejoicing.
Most of them were shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’, ‘Alihamdulilah’‎, meaning Allah is the greatest and all thanks is due to Allah respectively.
With the verdict, it means that Muslim students in Lagos State public schools have the right to wear Hijab on their school uniforms both within and outside their school premises without being punished or victimized.
While delivering the verdict on Thursday, the justices set aside the verdict of the lower court (Lagos State High Court), which earlier disallowed the use of Hijab.
Responding to the judgment, the President of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria in Lagos State, Saheed Ashafa, expressed delight over the pronouncement by the court.
While saying the right to wear Hijab was long overdue, Mr. Ashafa urged all parties to comply with the judgment.
He said, “This is victory for Islam! Victory to Muslims. The words of Allah have come to pass. We are glad that there are few judges whose neutrality has not be stained by sentiment.
“We wonder why we had to face so many challenges before our right is granted. This recognition and truthful interpretation on freedom of religion as enshrined in the Nigeria constitution (Section 36) and United Nations Charter, will further strengthen public trust on the judiciary.
“Today will remain historic in the life of every Muslim in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole. We will remain law abiding and appeal to all and sundry not to act in ways and manners that are contrary to the judgment.
“This should mark the end to harassment, embarrassment, victimization, cheat and all acts of wickedness unleashed on Muslim female students who wear the Hijab.”

This is to inform all aspirants (UTME) of Obafemi Awolowo University for 2016/2017 session that the deadline for the admission screening registration has been extended.

OAU Gets New Vice-Chancellor

The Senate at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has finally chosen an acting Vice Chancellor for the institution.
Professor Anthony Elujoba of the Faculty of Pharmacy has emerged the acting Vice-Chancellor following a meeting between members of the university senate on Thursday, July 21, 2016.
According to Naijaloaded, This came barely 24 hours after the Federal Government ordered the Senate of the school to use its internal mechanism in selecting a new Vice Chancellor.
It will be recalled that the Academic Staff Union of the institution had earlier disagreed with the Senior Staff Association of Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) over the appointment of Prof. Ayobami Salami, who is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) as the 11th VC of the university.
In a letter addressed to the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, the President earlier directed the Senate not to consider any of the candidates who earlier contested for the position.
The letter further says the Senate of the university should take immediate steps to implement the directive of the President and report back to the Federal Ministry of Education.

Bayelsa teachers in terrible condition – NUT

The national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Thursday described the plight of teachers in Bayelsa State where the government declared emergency in education, as “pitiable and pathetic.”
The NUT leaders made the observation at a press conference on Wednesday in Yenagoa, the state capital after a two-day consultative meeting with its state chapter.
The President, NUT, Mr. Michael Olukoya, lamented that months of unpaid salaries had left teachers on the throes of untold hardship.
Olukoya said NUT national executive came specifically to meet state Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, over the teachers’ plight, but were told the governor was not available.
He, however, appealed to the state government to pay the teachers’ salaries.
He said: “The working conditions of teachers here in Bayelsa are pathetic. The state of workers here is nothing to write home about. Despite their working conditions, we commend the teachers for allowing maturity, peace, concord and amity to prevail.
“We have come here to plead with Governor Seriake Dickson that teachers should be paid their salaries.  Look at the terrain of Bayelsa State, we have some communities that it will take hours before you can get there. It costs money and what have you. So, we are appealing to Dickson to pay the salaries of our members.
“Next to the issue of unpaid salaries is the minimum wage or consolidated arrears.  We stand to be challenged. We appeal that the government should not just take teachers for a ride.
“Every category of workers in Bayelsa State had been paid these arreas except the teachers. Teachers, mother of all professions, why are you treating them like this? So, we want to appeal to the government of Bayelsa State that this minimum wage or consolidated arrears that have eluded teachers should be paid to them.”

Gay Teachers In Ogun State Schools

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a private school teacher, Matthew Sodeke, for alleged child abuse in Igbala community in the  Sango Ota area of the state.
It was learnt that Sodeke, an English Language teacher, was caught sucking the private parts of a male pupil. The teacher was reportedly caught by a parent who had come to pick his child in the school.
It was gathered that the teacher allegedly s3xually assaulted the 16-year-old boy, identified only as Ajala, in one of the offices of the school after closing hours.
On Tuesday, July 12, around 4pm, Sodeke was said to have called the pupil upstairs into one of the offices.
It was learnt that Sodeke allegedly instructed the boy to remove his trousers, after which the teacher allegedly began to suck the boy’s private parts.
A yet-to-be-identified parent, who reportedly came to check her child in the school, was said to have caught the duo and raised the alarm.
The matter was thereafter reported at the Sango Police Division, and Sodeke was arrested.
A parent, identified only as Shokoya, who claimed to be a witness, said the teacher was beaten up by a mob before he was taken to the police station.
Shokoya added that the pupil confessed that his private parts had been sucked by the teacher on several occasions.
She said, “The teacher was caught while molesting the boy after school hours. He could not deny it because he was caught in the act.
“After a parent had raised the alarm, other parents and youths descended on the teacher and beat him to a pulp. He was thereafter handed over to the police at the Sango division.
“The teacher said he was formerly living with his brother, a pastor, who later sent him out when he (the pastor) caught him sucking a neighbour’s private parts.
“When the pupil was also interviewed, he confessed that it was not the first time the teacher would molest him. He said the teacher warned him not to disclose the act to anyone.”
Punch Metro learnt that Sodeke, who confessed to the crime, had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been charged to court.
He said, “It is a case of indecent assault. The English Language teacher, Sodeke, called the victim to one of the offices and asked him to remove his trousers. He then put Ajala’s private parts in his mouth.
“Based on this report, detectives from the Sango division arrested the culprit and brought him to the station for interrogation. He confessed to the crime. The matter was transferred to the SDCI, Abeokuta, as directed by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Abdulmajid Ali.
“The teacher has been charged to court and remanded in prison custody.”

FG directs schools to teach IRS, CRK separately

The Federal Government on Wednesday directed secondary schools to ensure that Islamic Religious Studies (IRS) and Christian Religious Studies (CRK) are taught as separate subjects.
Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu gave the directive in a statement issued in Abuja by the ministry’s Deputy Director (Press), Ben Bem-Gong.
According to the statement, the directive became imperative because of speculation regarding the merging of the two subjects.
The statement quoted the minster saying that students would not be compelled to study the two subjects, adding that secondary school students are at liberty to choose any of the two subjects depending on their religious beliefs.
The statement said: “The directive has become necessary following weeks of speculations in the social and conventional media networks across the country that the two subjects have been merged into one.
The confusion was created by a publisher who produced a book on the subject, combining Islamic Religious Studies (IRS) and Christian Religious Studies (CRK), which is being used in some private secondary schools.
“There is no compulsion in the study of the two religions. Secondary school students are at liberty to choose any of the two subjects depending on their religious leanings.
“The Christian Religious Studies and Islamic Religious Studies have remained separate subjects in the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO).
“If such a change has occurred (merger of IRS & CRS), the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) would have reflected same in their programmes and examinations.”

Covenant University appoints new VC

      CU appoints new VC

The Board of Regents, Covenant University’s apex governing body has approved the appointment of Professor Aderemi Aaron-Anthony Atayero, as the fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Secretary of the Board of Regents, Pastor Chioma Okwuanyi, on behalf of the Chairman of the Board and Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, made the announcement on Friday July 15, 2016 at a special meeting of Principal Officers, Deans, Directors and Heads of Departments.
Professor Atayero replaces Professor Charles Ayo, whose tenure elapsed last month.
Speaking on how the Board of Regents arrived on its choice of Professor Atayero, Pastor Okwuanyi said the Board, at a recent meeting to consider a number of eminent professors from Covenant University, decided to limit the choice to the products of the university in order to allow for continuity; somebody who has been in the system who knows where Professor Ayo stopped, and start building from that foundation.
The announcement was greeted with a thunderous applause from the audience including Professor Ayo, who described the day as symbolic in the annals of history of the university. It would have been disheartening, he said, if the university had to look elsewhere to pick his successor
He acknowledged the contributions of all present, while expressing satisfaction that he has bequeathed a university where faculty, staff and students can walk with their heads held high across the continent of Africa.
“I congratulate the incoming Vice-Chancellor. Actually, we started the journey together… I therefore have no doubt whatsoever that Professor Atayero will be able to move the university forward at a faster rate having been part and parcel of the Vision,” said Professor Ayo.
He subsequently presented his handover note titled, ‘On the Wings of a Prophetic Verdict: Vision 10:2022’ to Professor Atayero, and prayed that God will give the new Vice-Chancellor the wisdom and the grace to take the university to a greater height.
Professor Atayero, in his acceptance speech, thanked the Board of Regents for the confidence reposed in him to carry the mantle of leadership of the institution from where Professor Ayo stopped.
While acknowledging that the task before him is not an easy one, the Vice-Chancellor is optimistic that victory would be achieved.
“When I was made the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), when I was writing my acceptance letter then, one of the things I noted was I’m fully persuaded that this can only be done exclusively by the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is pleasing that I’m currently on the mountain, and one of the scriptures I read on the mountain is Romans 9:28: ‘For He will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth’.
“I am convinced that victory would be achieved even before the last lap as set by our indefatigable Chancellor. Another good reason is that we are standing on a very sound foundation. It is only a privilege for us and the team coming in to be able to carry this mantle forward and we make bold to say that by His grace we shall not disappoint.”
Curtains were drawn on the unveiling ceremony with Pastor Okwuanyi asking all present to pray that God gives Professor Atayero the grace to accomplish the task before him.
Professor Atayero and Professor Ayo later met in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office at the Senate Building, where members of staff led by the Director, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Dr. Akan Williams, were introduced to the new helmsman.
Atayero, a professor of Communication Engineering at Covenant University, who was the pioneer Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the institution, had also served as Coordinator School of Engineering, and twice as Head of Department of Electrical and Information Engineering of the university. He joined the faculty of Covenant University as a pioneer faculty in 2002.
Professor Atayero has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Radio Engineering and a Master of Science Degree in Satellite Communication Systems in 1992 and 1994 respectively from the Moscow Institute of Technology, Moscow, Russian Federation. He earned his Ph.D from the Moscow State Technical University of Civil Aviation (MSTUCA) in 2000.
Atayero is a member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and other professional bodies.
He has a number of scientific papers in reputable International peer-reviewed journals and proceedings to his credit. He is on the editorial board of the Covenant Journal of Science and Technology and of several other International Journals.
The new Vice-Chancellor is a recipient of various awards and scholarships including the ‘2009 Ford Foundation Teaching Innovation Award’. His current research interests are in various aspects of Communication Engineering, including (but not limited to): Wireless Sensor Networks, Wireless (Mobile) Communications, Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Cities.
He was until his appointment Head, Covenant University Internet of Things-Enabled Smart and Connected Communities (SmartCU) Cluster.
Professor Atayero is happily married and the marriage is blessed with three children.

Team From Adeleke University Finds Drug For Damaged Liver

Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, has recorded a medical breakthrough when a team of medical researchers in the institution produced a mixture for the treatment of patients with damaged livers.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwole Amusan, who disclosed this to pressmen yesterday during a press briefing ahead of the second convocation of the university scheduled for July 17, 2016, said that a human volunteer had been cured of a liver problem when the drug was tested on him.
Though Prof. Amusan did not say much on the development, he however stressed that the medical research breakthrough borders on antioxidant and hepato- protective potentials of lemon juice and sorghum mixture against paracetmol-induced liver damage in rats.
He attributed the feat to the academic staff’s deep commitment to discipline, professionalism and respect for the quality standard that the university stands for.
According to him, out of the 266 students who would graduate from different faculties with first degrees, 23 came out with First Class Division, 143 finished with Second Class Upper, while 97 made Second Class Lower Division.
The VC also announced the award of honorary degrees to deserving personalities, including the Timi of Ede, Oba Munirudeen Lawal, who will be offered the Honorary Degree of Science in Public Administration and Leadership.

Please come back to work. Kogi State University (Ayangba) Students beg lecturers

Students of Kogi State origin in tertiary institutions, have appealed to lecturers in Kogi State University, Ayangba, to call off their three months old strike.
The students, under the aegis of National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS), made the appeal on Tuesday in Lokoja during a press conference.
The President of NAKOSS, Mr Ahamadu Ibrahim, told newsmen that students and parents had been at the receiving end of the lecturers’ action, saying it was time they have a rethink.
“We are tired of staying at home.
“Since Gov. Yahaya Bello had already met 80 per cent of their demands, the lecturers should call off the strike to pave a way for the remaining unresolved matters to be thrashed through round table discussion,’’ Ibrahim pleaded
He urged the lecturers to be mindful of the negative implications of the continued closure of the institution, saying that the future of the state and its citizens was at stake.
The NAKOSS President commended Gov. Bello’s administration for its efforts to take education out of the woods and pleaded with stakeholders in the sector to cooperate and support the government.
He chided the national secretariat of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for issuing ultimatum to Kogi government over the strike by the lecturers in KSU.
“Two wrongs will never make a right. NAKOSS dissociates itself from the position of NANS.
“We believe that Gov. Yahaya Bello should rather be commended for his efforts at reaching out to the lecturers to prevail on them to suspend the strike,” Ibrahim said. (NAN)
